Advent 2023: Friday, December 8

The Light of the World

If I did not have faith, the problems in our world would be overwhelming. Left to our own plans, desires, and actions, humanity is hopelessly broken. Our world is in bitter darkness.

Why Christmas? Because it celebrates Jesus’ humanity and his sole ability to bring light, hope, and peace to the world. Jesus summed up God’s Law in three simple words: “Love one another” (John 13:34). He could have solved humanity’s problems from heaven, but he chose to physically enter and experience our world. Our joys. Our fears. Our temptations. Our pain. “The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it” (John 1:5). He didn’t just preach, “love,” he gave his life for us in unimaginable sacrificial love. Love so deep and genuine that we cannot comprehend it.

Jesus is the only answer. This Advent season let’s reflect on his gift. “The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned… For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be upon his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace”  (Isa 9:2, 6-7).

Hallelujah!
