Advent Devotion – Friday, December 13

Birth is the most human beginning to a human existence. When God is birthed, humanness is affirmed to the maximum. The whole story of scripture up to this point snaps into focus. When God becomes like us, we are given full permission to be human. If humanity is good enough for God, it’s good enough for us. Grace is being set free from the voice of the serpent (in Genesis 3) that tells us to do something or get something to make us more like God. Now that God is more like us, there is no more pressure to obtain more possessions, more striving, more money, etc…

At his birth, Jesus started a community oriented around this grace. The trauma of birth opens up a new space for a different kind of flourishing. Grace is a new birth. Without the confines of having to do anything to get to God by God becoming one of us, the opportunity to truly transform opens to us. Instead of trying to pull ourselves out of the swamp by our own hair, we are lifted out by “giving up.” No magical act of ours, including trying to acquire the right magical knowledge, will get us out of the mire. God being born a human is the only way.
